Firefighter who went missing in Lake Placid found safe in California

A Toronto fire captain who went missing during a ski trip in Lake Placid last Wednesday — prompting an extensive search and rescue mission — has been found safe in California.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said Capt. Constantinos “Danny” Filippidis, 49, is in the care of Sacramento police.

“We are all very relieved to know that he is safe, following what has been an exhaustive search operation,” Pegg said in a statement.

“On behalf of Toronto Fire Services, I would like to thank all those who participated in the search.”

Pegg said he couldn’t comment further as the case is under investigation.

Filippidis had been last seen on Whiteface Mountain on Wednesday afternoon, while on a trip with off-duty and retired firefighters, friends and family.

His belongings were still in the lodge and his vehicle in the parking lot.
